歸妹 is the marrying-off of a younger sister — but unlike Gradual Advance(漸), it is a place that has not kept the proper steps. When the Judgment cautions, calmly, that to go on is ill and nothing is favourable (征凶 无攸利), it means: let feeling run ahead and skip the order, and trouble follows. Do not hurry — wait your turn: this is the hexagram's cool counsel.
The upper trigram is Thunder(震 ☳, Wood), the lower Lake(兌 ☱, Metal). Thunder rising over a Lake — moving in pursuit of joy.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the third of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around October 5 to 11, as Autumn Equinox (秋分) gives way to Cold Dew (寒露) — when cold dew forms and autumn deepens. The place before it belongs to Contemplation(觀); the place after, to Innocence(无妄). This is a place that moves in pursuit of feeling and joy. 歸妹 is a young sister marrying — a union not wholly in its place, so to go straight on brings ill (征凶). Do not see only the joy of the start but reckon the end (永終知敝); the key is to keep to measure and to what is right.
