Wind(巽 ☴) moving over the Earth(坤 ☷) — a hexagram that looks far.
觀 means to see — to behold quietly from a high place. As wind passes over the earth and touches all things, this is a season of stepping back to observe rather than stepping in to handle. Like the pure moment of having washed the hands but not yet made the offering (盥而不薦), it is a time when reflection comes before action.
The upper trigram is Wind(巽 ☴, Wood), the lower Earth(坤 ☷). Wind moving over the earth — beholding widely.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Increase(益) · sun through rain; the second, Dispersion(渙) · with the current; the third, Gradual Progress(漸) · with the current; the fourth, Standstill(否) · with the current; the fifth, Splitting Apart(剝) · with the current; the top, Holding Together(比) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the second of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around September 29 to October 5, in the solar term Autumn Equinox (秋分) — when day and night stand equal again and the harvest begins. The place before it belongs to Grace / Adornment(賁); the place after, to The Marrying Maiden(歸妹). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place to observe and reflect more than to act. 觀 is a time of seeing widely, as wind passes over all the earth, and of mirroring oneself. Like the care of hands washed before the offering is made, a reverent beholding moves people.
