Thunder striking again above Thunder(震 ☳) — a hexagram that startles awake.
震 is thunder, and the shock that shakes. When lightning strikes again and again it frightens at first, but once the shock passes one laughs and talks It is a place where, amid the shaking, the mind snaps clear — a season that turns upheaval into awakening.
Both trigrams are Thunder(震 ☳), of the Wood(木) phase. Thunder striking again upon thunder — startled awake.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Enthusiasm(豫) · sun through rain; the second, The Marrying Maiden(歸妹) · with the current; the third, Abundance(豐) · sun through rain; the fourth, Return(復) · sun through rain; the fifth, Following(隨) · with the current; the top, Biting Through(噬嗑) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this is one of the four cardinal hexagrams (正卦) — it keeps the head of the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. 坎, 震, 離 and 兌 each hold a little less than a day from the moment a solstice or equinox arrives; fifteen hexagrams then follow, about six days apiece. That is around March 20–21 each year — the day when light and dark stand equal. Before it stands Progress(晉), the last hexagram of the quarter just ended; after it, Deliverance(解), the first of this one. The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place startled awake and roused into motion, like thunder. 震 is tremor and shock — fear makes one wary and reflective (恐致福). As thunder alarms a hundred li yet the sacred vessel is not dropped (不喪匕鬯), the key is to keep one's center even amid the shock.
