What this hexagram says

Thunder(震 ☳) rolling out over the Earth(坤 ☷) — a hexagram alive with spirit.

豫 is both joy and preparing ahead. As spring thunder wakes the earth and all things stir to follow, this is a place where spirit rises. Yet the hexagram's wisdom lies in preparing before one is drunk on joy — the very reason gladness and readiness sit within a single word.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Thunder(震 ☳, Wood), the lower Earth(坤 ☷). The first thunder rolling over the earth, rousing all things awake.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Arousing(震) · both at once; the second, Deliverance(解) · with the current; the third, Preponderance of the Small(小過) · with the current; the fourth, The Receptive(坤) · both at once; the fifth, Gathering Together(萃) · with the current; the top, Progress(晉) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the third of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around April 2 to 9, as Spring Equinox (春分) gives way to Clear and Bright (淸明) — when the sky clears and the spring planting begins. The place before it belongs to Great Power(大壯); the place after, to Conflict(訟). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place where energy surges and rouses itself. Prepare ahead and move people, and it goes smoothly. Only — 豫 also carries ease and heedlessness; the key is to keep from being drunk on the excitement and to hold your preparations ready.
