A Mountain seated upon a Mountain(艮 ☶) — a hexagram stopped and still.
艮 is stillness — the place of not moving, like a mountain. When the Judgment says one stops at the back and does not possess the body, walks the courtyard and does not see the person (艮其背 不獲其身 行其庭 不見其人), it speaks of a deep quiet unshaken by the noise outside. To know the time to go and the time to stop — even stopping has its season.
Both trigrams are Mountain(艮 ☶), of the Earth(土) phase. Mountain seated upon Mountain — stopped, and still.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Grace / Adornment(賁) · sun through rain; the second, Work on What Has Been Spoiled(蠱) · with the current; the third, Splitting Apart(剝) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Wanderer(旅) · sun through rain; the fifth, Gradual Progress(漸) · with the current; the top, Modesty(謙) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the eighth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around November 4 to 10, as Frost's Descent (霜降) gives way to Start of Winter (立冬) — when winter begins and the storing-up is hurried. The place before it belongs to Splitting Apart(剝); the place after, to After Completion(旣濟). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place that knows how to stop and stay still. 艮 is stopping — to halt at the place of desire, as one stops at the back and does not see oneself (艮其背). To know when to advance and when to halt is the way; stillness is not a standstill but a quiet held for what comes next.
