Wood — Wind(巽 ☴) — feeding Fire(離 ☲) beneath it: the hexagram of the cauldron.
鼎 is the three-legged cauldron, the place where the raw is cooked into something new. As one kindles wood and boils food, it is a season of fusing materials to shape value. As the Judgment says plainly — greatly fortunate, and prospering (元吉 亨) — bright fruit follows the work of cooking with care.
The upper trigram is Fire(離 ☲), the lower Wind(巽 ☴, Wood). A cauldron over the fire — cooking the raw into something new.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Great Possession(大有) · with the current; the second, The Wanderer(旅) · sun through rain; the third, Before Completion(未濟) · sun through rain; the fourth, Work on What Has Been Spoiled(蠱) · with the current; the fifth, Coming to Meet(姤) · with the current; the top, Duration(恒) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the third of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around July 4 to 10, as Summer Solstice (夏至) gives way to Minor Heat (小暑) — when the heat sets in in earnest. The place before it belongs to Coming to Meet(姤); the place after, to Abundance(豐). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of cooking the raw into something new, and nourishing it. 鼎 is the three-legged cauldron — as food is cooked, one nurtures people and purpose and honours the worthy (養聖賢). It prospers greatly (元吉亨): a time to cook up and set a new order after the old has been changed.
