What this hexagram says

A single Thunder(震 ☳) reviving deep within the Earth(坤 ☷) — a hexagram of return.

復 is the turning-back — the place where, at the winter solstice, the first 陽 warmth stirs again beneath the ground. Where all seemed spent, the light comes back; it is a season of recovery and renewal. As the Judgment says the return comes in seven days (七日來復), within this hexagram is the grain that, having passed the cycle's floor, must rise again.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Earth(坤 ☷), the lower Thunder(震 ☳, Wood). A single thread of 陽 first stirring beneath the earth, turning back.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Receptive(坤) · sun through rain; the second, Approach(臨) · sun through rain; the third, Darkening of the Light(明夷) · with the current; the fourth, The Arousing(震) · with the current; the fifth, Difficulty at the Beginning(屯) · both at once; the top, Nourishment(頤) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the second of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around December 28 to January 3, in the solar term Winter Solstice (冬至) — when the longest night has passed and the days begin to lengthen. The place before it belongs to Inner Truth(中孚); the place after, to Difficulty at the Beginning(屯). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place of recovery, where a single 陽 returns from the very bottom. 復 is the light first reviving at the winter solstice. As the saying goes — it returns in seven days — tend a small beginning with care and it becomes a great recovery.
