A bucket — Wind(巽 ☴) — let down into Water(坎 ☵): the hexagram of the well.
井 is the well. The village may move, but the well does not; drawn from, it does not empty, filled, it does not overflow (无喪无得) — the place of an unchanging source. As the Judgment cautions that the bucket nearly reaches the water but the rope falls short (汔至 亦未繘井), the work of drawing up and giving must be carried through to the end for its aim to be fulfilled.
The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Wind(巽 ☴, Wood). A bucket lowered into a well — never drying, shared by all alike.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Waiting / Nourishment(需) · with the current; the second, Obstruction(蹇) · with the current; the third, The Abysmal(坎) · sun through rain; the fourth, Preponderance of the Great(大過) · sun through rain; the fifth, Pushing Upward(升) · with the current; the top, The Gentle(巽) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fifteenth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around June 15 to 21, in the solar term Grain in Ear (芒種) — the busiest time of the year, when barley is cut and rice is set out. The place before it belongs to The Family(家人); the place after, to The Clinging(離), the cardinal hexagram that opens the next quarter. The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of a well that never dries and feeds all alike. 井 is the well that does not move though the village changes — nourishing people, ever the same. Only, if the bucket breaks or one fails to draw to the bottom it is in vain (羸其甁); the key is to draw all the way up, with care, to the end.
