Water(坎 ☵) drained out beneath a Lake(兌 ☱) — the hexagram of a dried-up lake.
困 is want and constraint — the place where the water that should fill the lake has leaked away below. Energy is blocked and things do not go as one wishes. Yet the Judgment says it prospers, and for the upright great person it is fortunate (亨 貞大人吉) — if the outside is straitened but the inside does not waver, this trial rather tempers a person hard.
The upper trigram is Lake(兌 ☱, Metal), the lower Water(坎 ☵). A lake whose water has drained away below — strength spent, in want.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Joyous(兌) · sun through rain; the second, Gathering Together(萃) · sun through rain; the third, Preponderance of the Great(大過) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Abysmal(坎) · with the current; the fifth, Deliverance(解) · sun through rain; the top, Conflict(訟) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the sixth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around October 23 to 29, in the solar term Frost's Descent (霜降) — when the first frost falls. The place before it belongs to Darkening of the Light(明夷); the place after, to Splitting Apart(剝). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place spent of strength and means, in want. 困 is a lake with its water gone — yet even in want there is a way to prosper (困亨), borne not by words but by deed and integrity (有言不信). The harder it is, the more keeping rightness over resentment tempers a person.
