What this hexagram says

Water(坎 ☵) drawn across Heaven(乾 ☰) — a hexagram of waiting for rain.

需 is waiting, and also nourishment. Clouds hang over heaven but have not yet let down their rain. It is the place of waiting for the time to ripen.

The Judgment says: with sincerity it shines and prospers (有孚 光亨), and it is favourable to cross the great stream (利涉大川). This is waiting held not in impatience but in trust — waiting that is not a stopping but a gathering of strength. Below, firm Heaven(乾) moves toward the peril of Water(坎) above, and crosses when the time is right.

To eat and drink and keep the body at ease (飮食) is also this hexagram's meaning. In the place of waiting, nourishing oneself serves better than fretting.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal). Its image is a rain-cloud drawn across the sky — rain that has not yet fallen.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Well(井) · with the current; the second, After Completion(旣濟) · with the current; the third, Limitation(節) · both at once; the fourth, Breakthrough(夬) · with the current; the fifth, Peace / Harmony(泰) · sun through rain; the top, The Taming Power of the Small(小畜) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the thirteenth of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around March 3 to 9, as Rain Water (雨水) gives way to Awakening of Insects (驚蟄) — when what slept underground through the winter begins to wake. The place before it belongs to Peace / Harmony(泰); the place after, to Following(隨). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

Someone with the grain of this hexagram often has the strength to advance but stands where the time is not yet ripe. Impatience is poison. Keep faith, nourish body and skill while you wait, and the rain will surely fall.
