승(升)은 올라감, 땅을 뚫고 어린 나무가 자라는 자리입니다. 눈에 띄지 않게 조금씩, 그러나 멈추지 않고 오르는 시기입니다. 괘사가 큰 사람을 보되 근심하지 말라, 남쪽으로 가면 길하다(用見大人 勿恤 南征吉)고 한 것처럼, 착실한 상승은 서두르지 않아도 결국 높은 곳에 이릅니다.
상괘는 땅 地(坤·토), 하괘는 바람 風(巽·목)입니다. 물상으로는 땅 속에서 나무가 자라 오르는 형상, 점차 위로 크는 자리에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 지풍승은 동지(冬至) 분기의 여섯 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 1월 21일 무렵부터 27일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 대한(大寒) 무렵 — 겨울의 끝자락, 추위가 마지막 고비를 넘는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 화택규(火澤睽), 바로 뒤는 지택림(地澤臨)이 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
차근차근 자라 오르는 자리입니다. 승(升)은 나무가 땅을 뚫고 크듯 순차적인 상승 — 서두르지 않아도 쌓이면 오릅니다. 큰 이를 만나되 근심 말고(勿恤) 나아가면 길합니다. 작은 것을 꾸준히 쌓아 높이 오르는 때입니다.

升 is to ascend — the place of a young tree forcing up through the ground. Unseen, a little at a time, yet without stopping, it rises. As the Judgment says to meet a great person without anxiety, and going south is fortunate (用見大人 勿恤 南征吉), a steady ascent reaches the heights in the end without any need to hurry.
The upper trigram is Earth(坤 ☷), the lower Wind(巽 ☴, Wood). A tree growing up from within the earth — rising higher by degrees.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the sixth of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around January 21 to 27, in the solar term Major Cold (大寒) — the tail of winter, as the cold passes its last peak. The place before it belongs to Opposition(睽); the place after, to Approach(臨).
