못(兌) 아래 불(離)이 타는 — 물과 불이 맞서 뒤바뀌는 괘입니다.
혁(革)은 가죽을 무두질해 바꾼다는 뜻, 근본을 갈아엎는 변혁입니다. 물과 불이 서로를 이기려 다투니 옛것이 새것으로 뒤집히는 자리입니다. 괘사가 날이 지나야 비로소 믿는다(已日乃孚)고 한 것처럼, 참된 변화는 성급함이 아니라 때가 무르익어 신뢰를 얻을 때 이루어집니다.
상괘는 못 澤(兌·금), 하괘는 불 火(離·화)입니다. 물상으로는 못 속에서 불이 일어 물과 불이 다투는 형상, 낡음을 바꾸는 자리에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 택화혁은 춘분(春分) 분기의 여섯 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 4월 21일 무렵부터 27일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 곡우(穀雨) 무렵 — 봄비가 내려 곡식을 기름지게 하는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 산풍고(山風蠱), 바로 뒤는 택천쾌(澤天夬)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.

革 means to tan a hide and change it — a revolution that overturns the root. As water and fire strive to master each other, the old is turned into the new. As the Judgment says one is trusted only when the day has come (已日乃孚), true change is made not by haste but when the time has ripened and trust is won.
The upper trigram is Lake(兌 ☱, Metal), the lower Fire(離 ☲). Fire kindled within a Lake — water and fire at odds, the old made new.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the sixth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around April 21 to 27, in the solar term Grain Rain (穀雨) — when spring rain falls to feed the grain. The place before it belongs to Work on What Has Been Spoiled(蠱); the place after, to Breakthrough(夬). This is a place of overturning and remaking the old. 革 is reforming the root, as one tans a hide — but only after the time ripens and trust is won (已日乃孚). The great person changes plainly, as a tiger changes its markings (大人虎變); only change upon rightness is without regret.
