What this hexagram says

Fire over Fire(離 ☲) — a twice-bright hexagram.

離 means to cling, and it means brightness. As fire cannot burn alone but shines only by clinging to something, this hexagram speaks of the brightness of leaning and being joined. When the Judgment says it is fortunate to keep a cow (畜牝牛吉), it means: the more blazing the brightness, the more it must be governed with gentleness to shine long.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

Both trigrams are Fire(離 ☲), of the Fire(火) phase. Fire above Fire — a doubled brightness.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Wanderer(旅) · sun through rain; the second, Great Possession(大有) · with the current; the third, Biting Through(噬嗑) · with the current; the fourth, Grace / Adornment(賁) · sun through rain; the fifth, Fellowship(同人) · sun through rain; the top, Abundance(豐) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this is one of the four cardinal hexagrams (正卦) — it keeps the head of the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. 坎, 震, 離 and 兌 each hold a little less than a day from the moment a solstice or equinox arrives; fifteen hexagrams then follow, about six days apiece. That is around June 21 each year — the longest day of the year. Before it stands The Well(井), the last hexagram of the quarter just ended; after it, Influence(咸), the first of this one. The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place that shines bright, yet shines by leaning on something. 離 is fire, and clinging — as fire must catch on fuel to burn, a person too shines long only when they lean on what is upright. Keep to rightness and it prospers; the key is what you lean on to give light.
