산(艮) 위에 물(坎)이 겹친 — 앞은 험하고 뒤도 막힌 괘입니다.
건(蹇)은 절뚝이며 나아가기 어려운 자리입니다. 험한 물 앞에 높은 산까지 막아섰으니, 곧장 뚫기보다 돌아가는 길을 찾는 시기입니다. 괘사가 서남이 이롭고 동북은 이롭지 않다(利西南 不利東北)고 한 것처럼, 방향을 바꾸고 큰 사람을 만나(利見大人) 지혜를 빌리는 것이 이 난관을 지나는 법입니다.
상괘는 물 水(坎·수), 하괘는 산 山(艮·토)입니다. 물상으로는 산 위에 험한 물이 놓인 형상, 앞이 막혀 나아가기 어려운 자리에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 수산건은 추분(秋分) 분기의 열네 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 12월 10일 무렵부터 16일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 대설(大雪) 무렵 — 큰 눈이 내리고 밤이 점점 길어져 동지를 향해 가는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 화수미제(火水未濟), 바로 뒤는 산뢰이(山雷頤)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
앞이 막혀 나아가기 어려운 자리입니다. 건(蹇)은 절뚝임이자 난관 — 험한 물이 앞을 막지요. 나아가면 더 막히니(往蹇) 돌아와 몸을 닦으며(反身修德) 밝은 이를 찾는 편이 낫습니다. 막힐 땐 밖이 아니라 자신을 돌아볼 때입니다.

蹇 is the place of limping, hard to move forward. With perilous water ahead and a high mountain barring the way, it is a season to seek the way around rather than break straight through. As the Judgment says the southwest is favourable and the northeast is not (利西南 不利東北), changing direction and meeting a great person (利見大人) to borrow their wisdom is how one passes this hardship.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is After Completion(旣濟) · sun through rain; the second, The Well(井) · both at once; the third, Holding Together(比) · both at once; the fourth, Influence(咸) · sun through rain; the fifth, Modesty(謙) · with the current; the top, Gradual Progress(漸) · with the current. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fourteenth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around December 10 to 16, in the solar term Major Snow (大雪) — when heavy snow falls and the nights draw toward their longest. The place before it belongs to Before Completion(未濟); the place after, to Nourishment(頤). This is a place blocked ahead, hard to advance. 蹇 is limping, a hardship — perilous water bars the way. To press on only meets the obstruction (往蹇); better to come back, cultivate oneself (反身修德), and seek the clear-sighted. When blocked, it is a time to look not outward but at oneself.
