Wind(巽 ☴) blowing above Thunder(震 ☳) — a hexagram that takes from above to add below.
益 is to increase, the inverse of Decrease(損). Taking from above to thicken what is below, it is a season in which those below rejoice. As the Judgment says it is favourable to have somewhere to go and to cross the great stream (利有攸往 利涉大川), an energy of expansion flows — sharing spreads and all flourish together.
The upper trigram is Wind(巽 ☴, Wood), the lower Thunder(震 ☳, Wood). Wind blowing above Thunder — taking from above to add below.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Contemplation(觀) · with the current; the second, Inner Truth(中孚) · sun through rain; the third, The Family(家人) · with the current; the fourth, Innocence(无妄) · with the current; the fifth, Nourishment(頤) · with the current; the top, Difficulty at the Beginning(屯) · both at once. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the tenth of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around February 13 to 19, in the solar term Start of Spring (立春) — when spring begins by the calendar though the ground is still frozen. The place before it belongs to Youthful Folly(蒙); the place after, to Gradual Progress(漸). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of adding and increasing. 益 is the inverted counterpart of Decrease — taking from above to thicken below. To advance is favourable, and one crosses the great stream It is a time to move toward the good you see and mend your faults
