A Mountain(艮 ☶) set upon a Lake(兌 ☱) — a hexagram that takes from below to add above.
損 is to decrease. As one digs the lake deeper below and raises the mountain with that soil, it is a place of restraining the present to fill what comes later. When the Judgment says two bowls may serve the offering (二簋可用享), decreasing is not stinginess — with sincerity, even the plain suffices. Emptying itself prepares the next filling.
The upper trigram is Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth), the lower Lake(兌 ☱, Metal). Taking from below to add above — giving by taking less.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Youthful Folly(蒙) · sun through rain; the second, Nourishment(頤) · with the current; the third, The Taming Power of the Great(大畜) · sun through rain; the fourth, Opposition(睽) · with the current; the fifth, Inner Truth(中孚) · sun through rain; the top, Approach(臨) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the eleventh of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around August 23 to 29, in the solar term End of Heat (處暑) — when the heat withdraws and mornings and evenings turn cool. The place before it belongs to Fellowship(同人); the place after, to Standstill(否). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of decreasing to add to something greater. 損 is reduction — taking from below to benefit above. With only sincerity, a plain offering suffices Decreasing is not loss but the paradox of being filled the more by emptying.
