中孚 is the truth at the heart's center — the place of holding sincerity within, as a bird broods its egg. When the Judgment says it reaches even to pigs and fishes and is fortunate (豚魚吉), it means: it goes through when the truth runs so deep it can move even dumb creatures. It is a season of moving people by inner faith rather than outward show.
The upper trigram is Wind(巽 ☴, Wood), the lower Lake(兌 ☱, Metal). Wind blowing over a Lake — hollow at the center, where truth passes through.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the first of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around December 22 to 28, in the solar term Winter Solstice (冬至) — when the longest night has passed and the days begin to lengthen. The place before it belongs to The Abysmal(坎), the cardinal hexagram that opens this quarter; the place after, to Return(復).
