Thunder(震 ☳) stirring beneath a Mountain(艮 ☶) — the shape of an open mouth, upper and lower jaw apart.
頤 is the jaw, and to nourish. It asks what one eats and what one speaks — that is, by what one nourishes oneself and others. As the Judgment bids us observe what is nourished (觀頤), this is a season of tempering together both what enters the mouth and what leaves it — one's food and one's words.
The upper trigram is Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth), the lower Thunder(震 ☳, Wood). An open mouth, upper and lower jaw apart — what one feeds and is fed by.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Splitting Apart(剝) · with the current; the second, Decrease(損) · sun through rain; the third, Grace / Adornment(賁) · with the current; the fourth, Biting Through(噬嗑) · with the current; the fifth, Increase(益) · sun through rain; the top, Return(復) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fifteenth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around December 16 to 21, in the solar term Major Snow (大雪) — when heavy snow falls and the nights draw toward their longest. The place before it belongs to Obstruction(蹇); the place after, to The Abysmal(坎), the cardinal hexagram that opens the next quarter. The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place that asks by what you nourish body and mind. 頤 is the jaw, and nourishing. It bids you nourish yourself rightly and take care with word and food — for what you take in is what makes you. A time to watch what you eat and what words you hold.
