What this hexagram says

Water(坎 ☵) clouds above, thunder(震 ☳) stirring below — a hexagram of something just about to be born.

屯 is the image of a sprout pushing through frozen ground. Above lies perilous Water(坎 ☵), below Thunder(震 ☳) begins to stir. The tangle and labour of something first coming into being — the difficulty of a beginning — is this hexagram's place.

The Judgment says: do not press forward, but set up helpers A beginning is always slow and tangled; rather than force it, first set the ground and the people in place. Yet before it lies the seed of great fortune — 元亨利貞.

Hardship here is not an end but a sign of birth. Like a sprout breaking frozen earth, in this place the very blockage is the signal of life.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Thunder(震 ☳, Wood). Its images are the first thunder beneath dark clouds, and a new shoot forcing up through frozen ground.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Holding Together(比) · with the current; the second, Limitation(節) · with the current; the third, After Completion(旣濟) · with the current; the fourth, Following(隨) · with the current; the fifth, Return(復) · with the current; the top, Increase(益) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the third of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around January 3 to 9, as Winter Solstice (冬至) gives way to Minor Cold (小寒) — when the year's cold bites hardest. The place before it belongs to Return(復); the place after, to Modesty(謙). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

Someone with the grain of this hexagram often finds beginnings especially tangled — and the more they rush, the more it tangles. Set the ground and the right people first, wait for the time, and the blockage becomes a sprout. What is needed is the eye to read difficulty not as failure but as birth.
