산(艮) 아래 샘물(坎)이 고인, 아직 길을 찾지 못한 어린 물의 괘입니다.
몽(蒙)은 덮여 있어 아직 밝지 않은 상태입니다. 산기슭에 갓 솟은 샘이 어디로 흐를지 모르는 형상이지요. 어림과 배움, 아직 열리지 않은 계몽의 자리입니다.
괘사에서 스승이 어린 이를 찾는 게 아니라 어린 이가 스승을 찾는다(匪我求童蒙 童蒙求我)고 한 대목이 인상적입니다. 배움은 목마른 쪽이 먼저 우물로 가야 시작된다는 것이지요. 처음 물음엔 답하되 같은 물음을 거듭 흐리면 답하지 않는(初筮告 再三瀆) 절제까지 담겨 있습니다.
어림은 부끄러움이 아니라 기름의 대상입니다. 바르게 길러 내면(利貞) 흐린 샘도 맑은 물이 됩니다.
상괘는 산 山(艮·토), 하괘는 물 水(坎·수)입니다. 물상으로는 산기슭에 갓 솟은 샘, 아직 길을 내지 못한 어린 물에 견주어집니다.
焦氏易林은 괘 하나마다 예순네 편의 시구를 달아 두었습니다. 산수몽이 하루를 맡은 날 daycolor가 오늘의 시구로 건넬 수 있는 것은 그 가운데 여섯 편 — 여섯 효 가운데 하나가 움직여 닿는 여섯 괘의 시구입니다. 맨 아래 효가 움직이면 산택손(山澤損) · 순(順), 둘째 효면 산지박(山地剝) · 비 사이로 햇살, 셋째 효면 산풍고(山風蠱) · 순(順), 넷째 효면 화수미제(火水未濟) · 비 사이로 햇살, 다섯째 효면 풍수환(風水渙) · 비 사이로 햇살, 맨 위 효면 지수사(地水師) · 순(順). 이름 뒤에 붙인 말은 그 시구의 결입니다 — 길흉의 판정이 아니라 그날의 분위기를 읽는 단서이며, 세 가지 말의 뜻은 용어집의 초씨역림 항목에 적어 두었습니다. 어느 효가 움직이는지는 각자의 사주에 그날의 간지를 더한 수가 정합니다.
焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 산수몽은 동지(冬至) 분기의 아홉 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 2월 7일 무렵부터 13일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 입춘(立春) 무렵 — 달력으로는 봄이 서지만 땅은 아직 얼어 있는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 뇌산소과(雷山小過), 바로 뒤는 풍뢰익(風雷益)이 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
산수몽의 결을 지닌 사람은 아직 서툴고 길을 못 찾는 자리에 서 있곤 합니다. 부끄러워 말고 먼저 묻고 배우면 됩니다. 다만 같은 물음을 흐리지 말고, 한 번의 가르침을 새기는 태도가 그 물을 맑게 만듭니다.
A young spring gathered beneath a Mountain(艮 ☶) — Water(坎 ☵) that has not yet found its way.
蒙 is a state still covered, not yet bright — a spring newly risen at a mountain's foot, not knowing which way to flow. It is the place of youth and of learning, of a light not yet opened.
The Judgment is striking: it is not the teacher who seeks the young, but the young who seek the teacher (匪我求童蒙 童蒙求我). Learning begins only when the thirsty one goes first to the well. It carries a discipline, too — answer the first asking, but not the same question stirred up again and again (初筮告 再三瀆).
Youth is not a shame but something to be nurtured. Raised rightly (利貞), even a clouded spring becomes clear water.
The upper trigram is Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth), the lower Water(坎 ☵). Its image is a spring newly risen at a mountain's foot — young water that has not yet cut its channel.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the ninth of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around February 7 to 13, in the solar term Start of Spring (立春) — when spring begins by the calendar though the ground is still frozen. The place before it belongs to Preponderance of the Small(小過); the place after, to Increase(益). Someone with the grain of this hexagram often stands where they are still unskilled and unsure of the way. There is no shame in asking and learning first. Only — do not muddy the same question again and again; the water clears in one who takes a single teaching to heart.
