대축(大畜)은 크게 모으고 기르는 자리입니다. 산이 하늘의 큰 기운을 안으로 갈무리하듯, 실력과 덕을 두텁게 축적하는 시기입니다. 괘사가 집에서 먹지 않으면 길하고(不家食吉) 큰 내를 건너는 것이 이롭다(利涉大川)고 한 것은, 쌓은 것을 안에만 두지 말고 세상으로 나아가 쓰라는 권함입니다.
상괘는 산 山(艮·토), 하괘는 하늘 天(乾·금)입니다. 물상으로는 산 속에 하늘을 품은 형상, 큰 것을 안으로 쌓아 기르는 힘에 견주어집니다.
焦氏易林은 괘 하나마다 예순네 편의 시구를 달아 두었습니다. 산천대축이 하루를 맡은 날 daycolor가 오늘의 시구로 건넬 수 있는 것은 그 가운데 여섯 편 — 여섯 효 가운데 하나가 움직여 닿는 여섯 괘의 시구입니다. 맨 아래 효가 움직이면 산풍고(山風蠱) · 순(順), 둘째 효면 산화비(山火賁) · 순(順), 셋째 효면 산택손(山澤損) · 양면(兩面), 넷째 효면 화천대유(火天大有) · 비 사이로 햇살, 다섯째 효면 풍천소축(風天小畜) · 순(順), 맨 위 효면 지천태(地天泰) · 순(順). 이름 뒤에 붙인 말은 그 시구의 결입니다 — 길흉의 판정이 아니라 그날의 분위기를 읽는 단서이며, 세 가지 말의 뜻은 용어집의 초씨역림 항목에 적어 두었습니다. 어느 효가 움직이는지는 각자의 사주에 그날의 간지를 더한 수가 정합니다.
焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 산천대축은 하지(夏至) 분기의 열다섯 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 9월 16일 무렵부터 23일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 백로(白露) 무렵 — 밤 기온이 내려가 풀잎에 이슬이 맺히는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 택지췌(澤地萃), 바로 뒤는 다음 분기를 여는 정괘 중택태(重澤兌)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
큰 힘과 실력을 안으로 크게 쌓는 자리입니다. 소축이 작은 저축이라면 대축은 큰 축적이지요. 날마다 덕을 새로이 하며(日新其德) 큰일을 감당합니다. 쌓되 가두지 말고, 때가 되면 크게 씁니다.

大畜 is the place of gathering and nurturing greatly. As a mountain gathers heaven's great force within, this is a season of accumulating skill and virtue thickly. When the Judgment says it is fortunate not to eat at home (不家食吉) and favourable to cross the great stream (利涉大川), it urges: do not keep what you have stored to yourself, but go out into the world and use it.
The upper trigram is Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth), the lower Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal). A Mountain holding Heaven within — great strength stored inward.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Work on What Has Been Spoiled(蠱) · with the current; the second, Grace / Adornment(賁) · with the current; the third, Decrease(損) · both at once; the fourth, Great Possession(大有) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Taming Power of the Small(小畜) · with the current; the top, Peace / Harmony(泰) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fifteenth of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around September 16 to 23, in the solar term White Dew (白露) — when the nights cool and dew gathers on the grass. The place before it belongs to Gathering Together(萃); the place after, to The Joyous(兌), the cardinal hexagram that opens the next quarter. This is a place to store great strength and skill within. If small taming is a little saving, great taming is large accumulation. Renewing one's virtue daily (日新其德), one takes on great matters. Store, but do not lock away — when the time comes, use it greatly.
