Fire(離 ☲) glowing softly beneath a Mountain(艮 ☶) — a hexagram of graceful adornment.
賁 is adornment, like the evening glow that colours a mountain's foot. Yet the beauty of this hexagram is not surface show but the harmony of inside and outside met. As the last counsel — to adorn with plain white is without fault (白賁 无咎) — the highest ornament is, in the end, a return to the simple.
The upper trigram is Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth), the lower Fire(離 ☲). Fire glowing like dusk beneath a Mountain — adorning things beautifully.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Keeping Still(艮) · both at once; the second, The Taming Power of the Great(大畜) · sun through rain; the third, Nourishment(頤) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Clinging(離) · with the current; the fifth, The Family(家人) · sun through rain; the top, Darkening of the Light(明夷) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the first of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around September 24 to 29, in the solar term Autumn Equinox (秋分) — when day and night stand equal again and the harvest begins. The place before it belongs to The Joyous(兌), the cardinal hexagram that opens this quarter; the place after, to Contemplation(觀). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place to refine and adorn the surface. 賁 is pattern and ornament, favourable in small matters — but when the adornment outruns the substance, it is empty. Like plain-white grace, knowing how to return to the unadorned is the true beauty.
