Wind(巽 ☴) blowing above Heaven(乾 ☰) — a hexagram where the gathering is not yet great.
小畜 is the place of storing small and pausing for a while. Its temperature is the line 密雲不雨 — dense clouds, but no rain yet. The force is gathering, but the time to break has not come; it is a season of saving small things, bit by bit, and waiting.
The upper trigram is Wind(巽 ☴, Wood), the lower Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal). Wind blowing above the sky — clouds that have not yet become rain.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Gentle(巽) · sun through rain; the second, The Family(家人) · with the current; the third, Inner Truth(中孚) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Creative(乾) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Taming Power of the Great(大畜) · with the current; the top, Waiting / Nourishment(需) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the eleventh of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around May 21 to 27, in the solar term Grain Buds (小滿) — when the sun is generous and all things begin to fill. The place before it belongs to Holding Together(比); the place after, to The Creative(乾). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place to gather small and choose the time, rather than achieve something great at once. As wind gathers clouds, save a little and tend your bonds, and in time it becomes rain. Steady small steps serve better than a hurried great one.
