동인(同人)은 사람과 뜻을 같이하는 자리입니다. 불빛이 하늘 아래 멀리 퍼지듯, 마음이 통하면 그 유대는 넓게 뻗습니다. 괘사가 들에서 사람과 함께한다(同人于野)고 한 것은, 좁은 울타리 안이 아니라 탁 트인 곳에서 공평하게 뜻을 나눌 때 형통하다는 뜻입니다.
상괘는 하늘 天(乾·금), 하괘는 불 火(離·화)입니다. 물상으로는 하늘 아래 밝게 타오르는 불, 뜻으로 모인 사람들에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 천화동인은 하지(夏至) 분기의 열 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 8월 17일 무렵부터 23일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 입추(立秋) 무렵 — 달력으로는 가을이 서지만 늦더위가 남아 있는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 수택절(水澤節), 바로 뒤는 산택손(山澤損)이 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
사람과 뜻을 같이하는 자리입니다. 끼리끼리가 아니라 들판처럼 열린 데서(于野) 널리 함께할 때 크게 형통하지요. 사사로운 무리보다 공변된 뜻으로 모이면 큰 내도 함께 건넙니다.

同人 is the place of sharing an aim with others. As firelight spreads far beneath the sky, when hearts meet the bond reaches wide. The Judgment's "fellowship in the open field" (同人于野) means it prospers when purpose is shared fairly in the open, not within a narrow fence.
The upper trigram is Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal), the lower Fire(離 ☲). Fire burning bright beneath the sky — people gathered by a shared aim.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Retreat(遯) · with the current; the second, The Creative(乾) · sun through rain; the third, Innocence(无妄) · with the current; the fourth, The Family(家人) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Clinging(離) · with the current; the top, Revolution(革) · sun through rain. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the tenth of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around August 17 to 23, in the solar term Start of Autumn (立秋) — when autumn begins by the calendar though the late heat lingers. The place before it belongs to Limitation(節); the place after, to Decrease(損).
