What this hexagram says

Water(坎 ☵) held within a Lake(兌 ☱) — a hexagram that sets joints so nothing overflows.

節 is a joint, and restraint. As a lake takes in only as much water as it can hold, it is a place of keeping the right line. Yet the Judgment adds that bitter restraint cannot be held for long (苦節 不可貞) — measure is needed, but taken too far it harms; a joint is not for tightening life but for dividing it in balance.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Lake(兌 ☱, Metal). Water held within a Lake — set into joints so it does not overflow.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Abysmal(坎) · sun through rain; the second, Difficulty at the Beginning(屯) · sun through rain; the third, Waiting / Nourishment(需) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Joyous(兌) · with the current; the fifth, Approach(臨) · sun through rain; the top, Inner Truth(中孚) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the ninth of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around August 10 to 17, in the solar term Start of Autumn (立秋) — when autumn begins by the calendar though the late heat lingers. The place before it belongs to Duration(恒); the place after, to Fellowship(同人). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place of setting joints against excess. 節 is the joint of bamboo — a limit so nothing overflows. Yet bitter restraint cannot be kept long (苦節), so do not lose rightness. The key is a balance that spends sparingly yet harms neither means nor people (不傷財 不害民).
