What this hexagram says

Six lines, every one an unbroken 陽(⚊) — a hexagram without a single bend.

Heaven(乾 ☰) above, heaven(乾 ☰) below. Of the eight trigrams this is the one of pure 陽, and here it stands doubled — the strongest of all sixty-four hexagrams. Heaven never stops turning, and that ceaselessness is its nature: whoever stands in this place scarcely knows how to stop. It is the force that creates, leads, and goes first.

The four words of the Judgment — 元亨利貞 (beginning · growth · harvest · steadfastness) — set out the four seasons of a single year: sprouting in spring, growing in summer, gathering in autumn, guarding the seed in winter. They hold the whole force that raises things up and carries them once around. So Heaven(乾) has long been read as the sign of the one who begins and leads.

The six lines trace a journey from a dragon hidden in the deep to a dragon flown to the very top of the sky. And at the end the old text adds, plainly: 亢龍有悔 — a dragon risen all the way has cause for regret. The moment you feel you have arrived is, in truth, the moment to be most careful.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

Both trigrams are Heaven(乾 ☰), belonging to the Metal(金) phase. Its images are heaven, the dragon, the sovereign, the father, round things, and hard metal and jade.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Coming to Meet(姤) · with the current; the second, Fellowship(同人) · sun through rain; the third, Treading / Conduct(履) · with the current; the fourth, The Taming Power of the Small(小畜) · with the current; the fifth, Great Possession(大有) · with the current; the top, Breakthrough(夬) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the twelfth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around May 27 to June 3, in the solar term Grain Buds (小滿) — when the sun is generous and all things begin to fill. The place before it belongs to The Taming Power of the Small(小畜); the place after, to Great Possession(大有). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

Someone with the grain of this hexagram tends to make their own road — moving before waiting, and would rather build the board than follow it. That strength is their greatest asset, and, as the six lines warn, the very thing to watch. Its wisdom lies in the small margin of drawing back a step just when you feel you have risen all the way.
