A Mountain(艮 ☶) holding firm beneath Heaven(乾 ☰) — a hexagram that knows when to withdraw.
遯 means to retreat and hide. Two 陰 lines grow up from below, so this is a place where stepping aside is wiser than standing against. As the Judgment says it prospers, and rightness in small things is favourable (亨 小利貞), retreat is not defeat but a way of sparing one's strength — a recharging.
The upper trigram is Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal), the lower Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth). A mountain standing firm beneath the sky — energy withdrawing to yield its place.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Fellowship(同人) · sun through rain; the second, Coming to Meet(姤) · with the current; the third, Standstill(否) · sun through rain; the fourth, Gradual Progress(漸) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Wanderer(旅) · with the current; the top, Influence(咸) · both at once. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the seventh of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around July 29 to August 4, in the solar term Major Heat (大暑) — when the year's heat is at its height. The place before it belongs to Treading / Conduct(履); the place after, to Duration(恒). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place to withdraw, knowing the time. 遯 is retreat and retirement — when the small-minded rise, the noble one does not quarrel but draws back and keeps themselves. Retreat is not defeat but wisdom; the further and calmer the withdrawal (肥遯), the more favourable it is.
