Heaven(乾 ☰) rising only upward, Earth(坤 ☷) sinking only down — a hexagram turned back to back.
It is 泰 inverted, so 否 is blockage. High and low each go their own way, and passage is cut. Yet the Judgment only notes, calmly, that the great goes and the small comes (大往小來) — it does not say this blockage is forever. A standstill too is a season; one passes it by building substance within.
The upper trigram is Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal), the lower Earth(坤 ☷). Heaven rising only upward and Earth sinking only down, turned back to back.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Innocence(无妄) · sun through rain; the second, Conflict(訟) · both at once; the third, Retreat(遯) · sun through rain; the fourth, Contemplation(觀) · with the current; the fifth, Progress(晉) · sun through rain; the top, Gathering Together(萃) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the twelfth of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around August 29 to September 4, in the solar term End of Heat (處暑) — when the heat withdraws and mornings and evenings turn cool. The place before it belongs to Decrease(損); the place after, to The Gentle(巽). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place where high and low are blocked and intent does not pass. Force it and it blocks the more. Better to draw back, keep yourself, and wait for the time. Even a standstill has its end.
