땅(坤) 속에 물(坎)이 고여 있는, 무리를 품은 괘입니다.
사(師)는 군대이자 사람의 무리입니다. 땅속에 물이 고이듯, 흩어진 힘을 하나로 그러모은 형상이지요. 여러 음(陰) 가운데 하나의 양(陽)이 서서 무리를 거느립니다 — 장수와 병사의 그림입니다.
괘사는 곧고, 경륜 있는 어른이면 길하다(貞 丈人 吉无咎)고 말합니다. 무리를 이끌려면 명분이 바르고(貞) 사람됨이 익어야(丈人) 한다는 뜻입니다. 힘을 모으는 일은 늘 위험하니, 규율과 대의가 없으면 도리어 화가 됩니다.
군대는 두되 함부로 쓰지 않습니다. 땅이 물을 품듯, 큰 힘은 안으로 다스려질 때에야 쓸모가 됩니다.
상괘는 땅 地(坤·토), 하괘는 물 水(坎·수)입니다. 물상으로는 땅속에 고인 물, 흩어진 것을 품어 모으는 대지에 견주어집니다.
焦氏易林은 괘 하나마다 예순네 편의 시구를 달아 두었습니다. 지수사가 하루를 맡은 날 daycolor가 오늘의 시구로 건넬 수 있는 것은 그 가운데 여섯 편 — 여섯 효 가운데 하나가 움직여 닿는 여섯 괘의 시구입니다. 맨 아래 효가 움직이면 지택림(地澤臨) · 비 사이로 햇살, 둘째 효면 중지곤(重地坤) · 순(順), 셋째 효면 지풍승(地風升) · 비 사이로 햇살, 넷째 효면 뇌수해(雷水解) · 순(順), 다섯째 효면 중수감(重水坎) · 비 사이로 햇살, 맨 위 효면 산수몽(山水蒙) · 비 사이로 햇살. 이름 뒤에 붙인 말은 그 시구의 결입니다 — 길흉의 판정이 아니라 그날의 분위기를 읽는 단서이며, 세 가지 말의 뜻은 용어집의 초씨역림 항목에 적어 두었습니다. 어느 효가 움직이는지는 각자의 사주에 그날의 간지를 더한 수가 정합니다.
焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 지수사는 춘분(春分) 분기의 아홉 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 5월 9일 무렵부터 15일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 입하(立夏) 무렵 — 여름이 서고 신록이 짙어지는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 화산려(火山旅), 바로 뒤는 수지비(水地比)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
지수사의 결을 지닌 사람은 사람과 힘을 모아 이끄는 자리에 서곤 합니다. 다만 명분과 규율이 먼저 서야 하지요. 바른 대의와 익은 경륜으로 이끌면 무리가 따르고, 그렇지 않으면 이내 흩어집니다.

師 is an army, a host of people. As water pools within the earth, scattered strength is gathered into one. A single 陽 line leads a company of 陰 — the picture of a general and their troops.
The Judgment says: with constancy, and an elder of experience, it is fortunate (貞 丈人 吉无咎). To lead a host, the cause must be upright (貞) and the person seasoned (丈人). Gathering force is always dangerous; without discipline and a great cause it turns to disaster.
An army is kept but not used lightly. As the earth holds water, great force becomes useful only when it is governed within.
The upper trigram is Earth(坤 ☷), the lower Water(坎 ☵). Its image is water pooled within the earth — the ground that gathers what is scattered.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Approach(臨) · sun through rain; the second, The Receptive(坤) · with the current; the third, Pushing Upward(升) · sun through rain; the fourth, Deliverance(解) · with the current; the fifth, The Abysmal(坎) · sun through rain; the top, Youthful Folly(蒙) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the ninth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around May 9 to 15, in the solar term Start of Summer (立夏) — when summer begins and the new green deepens. The place before it belongs to The Wanderer(旅); the place after, to Holding Together(比). Someone with the grain of this hexagram often stands where they must gather people and strength and lead. Only — the cause and the discipline must be set first. Led by an upright purpose and seasoned judgment, the host will follow; without them, it soon scatters.
