What this hexagram says

Thunder(震 ☳) passing low above a Mountain(艮 ☶) — a hexagram where the small is a little in excess.

小過 is a small exceeding. As the Judgment says a flying bird leaves its call, and it is not fitting to go up but fitting to go down (飛鳥遺之音 不宜上宜下), it is a place to be careful in small matters rather than launch big ones. A season where it is favourable to refrain from great things, to tend the detail, and to lower oneself in humility.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Thunder(震 ☳, Wood), the lower Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth). Thunder passing low over a Mountain — the small a little in excess.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Abundance(豐) · sun through rain; the second, Duration(恒) · with the current; the third, Enthusiasm(豫) · sun through rain; the fourth, Modesty(謙) · sun through rain; the fifth, Influence(咸) · with the current; the top, The Wanderer(旅) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the eighth of the fifteen places in the Winter Solstice(冬至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around February 2 to 7, as Major Cold (大寒) gives way to Start of Spring (立春) — when spring begins by the calendar though the ground is still frozen. The place before it belongs to Approach(臨); the place after, to Youthful Folly(蒙). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place where a small matter is a little in excess. 小過 is not fitting for great matters but fitting for small ones (可小事 不可大事). As a flying bird does better to alight than to climb (宜下), it is better to hold back, a little in excess, with humility and thrift. The key is not to overstep one's measure.
