산(艮) 위에 못(兌)이 얹힌 — 위가 기뻐하고 아래가 멈춰 서로 감응하는 괘입니다.
함(咸)은 느낌, 마음과 마음이 서로 통하는 감응입니다. 젊은 남녀가 서로에게 끌리는 자리라, 억지 없는 교감이 시작되는 시기입니다. 괘사가 곧음이 이롭고 여자를 취하면 길하다(利貞 取女吉)고 한 것처럼, 진심이 오갈 때 그 끌림은 바른 결실로 이어집니다.
상괘는 못 澤(兌·금), 하괘는 산 山(艮·토)입니다. 물상으로는 산 위에 못이 얹혀 촉촉이 스미는 형상, 두 기운이 서로 느끼는 자리에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 택산함은 하지(夏至) 분기의 첫 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 6월 22일 무렵부터 28일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 하지(夏至) 무렵 — 낮이 가장 긴 날을 지나 해가 다시 짧아지기 시작하는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 이 분기의 첫머리를 지키는 정괘 중화리(重火離), 바로 뒤는 천풍구(天風姤)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
서로 느끼고 감응하는 자리입니다. 함(咸)은 사심 없는 감응 — 젊은 남녀가 끌리듯 자연스러운 통함이지요. 비우고 받아들이면(虛受人) 두루 통하나, 잔재주로 움직이려 하면 얕아집니다. 진심의 울림이 관건입니다.

咸 is feeling — the resonance of heart meeting heart. It is the place where a young man and woman are drawn to one another, a season when an artless communion begins. As the Judgment says rightness is favourable and it is fortunate to take a wife (利貞 取女吉), when sincerity passes between, that drawing leads to an upright fruit.
The upper trigram is Lake(兌 ☱, Metal), the lower Mountain(艮 ☶, Earth). A Lake resting on a Mountain, soaking in — two forces feeling each other.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Revolution(革) · with the current; the second, Preponderance of the Great(大過) · sun through rain; the third, Gathering Together(萃) · sun through rain; the fourth, Obstruction(蹇) · with the current; the fifth, Preponderance of the Small(小過) · with the current; the top, Retreat(遯) · sun through rain. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the first of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around June 22 to 28, in the solar term Summer Solstice (夏至) — when the longest day has passed and the days begin to shorten. The place before it belongs to The Clinging(離), the cardinal hexagram that opens this quarter; the place after, to Coming to Meet(姤). This is a place of feeling and resonating with one another. 咸 is a resonance without self-interest — a natural meeting, as the young are drawn together. Empty yourself and receive (虛受人) and it goes through widely; move by little tricks and it turns shallow. The ring of sincerity is the key.
