What this hexagram says

Water above, Fire below — a hexagram where all six lines have found their place, nearest to completion.

It is called 旣濟 — already crossed the river — for exactly that. Yet the Judgment adds one calm phrase: the beginning is fortunate, the end disordered The very moment of full completion is also the moment disorder begins — completion is not a stopping but a threshold that leads on to the next incompletion (hexagram 64, 未濟).

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Fire(離 ☲). Water above and Fire below — every line has found its proper place.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Obstruction(蹇) · with the current; the second, Waiting / Nourishment(需) · both at once; the third, Difficulty at the Beginning(屯) · both at once; the fourth, Revolution(革) · with the current; the fifth, Darkening of the Light(明夷) · sun through rain; the top, The Family(家人) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the ninth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around November 10 to 16, in the solar term Start of Winter (立冬) — when winter begins and the storing-up is hurried. The place before it belongs to Keeping Still(艮); the place after, to Biting Through(噬嗑). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

This is a place of a matter already accomplished, complete. 旣濟 is the river already crossed — yet the beginning is fortunate, the end disordered (初吉終亂). The moment all is done is also where unravelling starts; the key is to guard against ease after completion and prepare in advance.
