Thunder(震 ☳) and Wind(巽 ☴) stirring together — a long-enduring hexagram.
恒 is constancy, the place of holding without change. As thunder and wind always travel in pair, it speaks of the grain of a bond or a work that can last. When the Judgment says it prospers, is without fault, and rightness is favourable (亨 无咎 利貞), the power to endure comes from the steadiness that keeps its first heart.
The upper trigram is Thunder(震 ☳, Wood), the lower Wind(巽 ☴, Wood). Thunder and Wind rising ever together — enduring without change.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Great Power(大壯) · sun through rain; the second, Preponderance of the Small(小過) · with the current; the third, Deliverance(解) · sun through rain; the fourth, Pushing Upward(升) · sun through rain; the fifth, Preponderance of the Great(大過) · sun through rain; the top, The Cauldron(鼎) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the eighth of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around August 4 to 10, as Major Heat (大暑) gives way to Start of Autumn (立秋) — when autumn begins by the calendar though the late heat lingers. The place before it belongs to Retreat(遯); the place after, to Limitation(節). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of enduring, one and the same, for a long time. 恒 is the ever-constant — holding one's place and making a steady thing. Yet not a stubborn standing-still, but a constancy that keeps its bearing within change. To last, one must keep the rightness of the start.
