Wind(巽 ☴) stirring beneath Heaven(乾 ☰) — a hexagram where a single 陰 slips in below.
姤 is a chance meeting, an unlooked-for encounter. A single 陰 enters quietly beneath five 陽 — small, yet not to be ignored. When the Judgment says the woman is strong, do not take her (女壯 勿用取女), it is a calm caution: even in a welcome meeting, one must read its momentum well.
The upper trigram is Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal), the lower Wind(巽 ☴, Wood). Wind moving beneath the sky — a chance encounter that comes upon you.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is The Creative(乾) · with the current; the second, Retreat(遯) · sun through rain; the third, Conflict(訟) · sun through rain; the fourth, The Gentle(巽) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Cauldron(鼎) · sun through rain; the top, Preponderance of the Great(大過) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the second of the fifteen places in the Summer Solstice(夏至) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around June 28 to July 4, in the solar term Summer Solstice (夏至) — when the longest day has passed and the days begin to shorten. The place before it belongs to Influence(咸); the place after, to The Cauldron(鼎). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
This is a place of an unexpected meeting and encounter. 姤 is one 陰 first arising beneath five 陽 — small, but a growing force. The warning that the woman is strong (女壯) means: do not entangle carelessly. The key is not to slight a small beginning but to watch it at the outset.
