What this hexagram says

Heaven(乾 ☰) rising, Water(坎 ☵) sinking — two forces turned back to back.

訟 is dispute, litigation. Heaven above climbs and water below flows down, so the two run opposite and clash. It is the inverted counterpart of Waiting(需) — waiting that, worn thin, has turned to conflict.

The Judgment is blunt: the middle is fortunate, but pressed to the end it turns ill A dispute stopped in time is better; pushed to a finish, it wounds. Do not cross the great stream (不利涉大川); meet a fair and clear-sighted person (利見大人).

It is not a matter of winning and losing, but of the wisdom to lessen the strife itself. To know how to step back is, in truth, to win.

Structure — trigrams & the six changes

The upper trigram is Heaven(乾 ☰, Metal), the lower Water(坎 ☵). Its image is heaven rising and water sinking — two forces turned back to back.

The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Treading / Conduct(履) · both at once; the second, Standstill(否) · with the current; the third, Coming to Meet(姤) · with the current; the fourth, Dispersion(渙) · both at once; the fifth, Before Completion(未濟) · sun through rain; the top, Oppression(困) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.

Jikil — the season it governs

In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fourth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around April 9 to 15, in the solar term Clear and Bright (淸明) — when the sky clears and the spring planting begins. The place before it belongs to Enthusiasm(豫); the place after, to Work on What Has Been Spoiled(蠱). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.

A person in this place

Someone with the grain of this hexagram often stands where friction and quarrels come easily. The harder they press to settle right and wrong to the very end, the more it wounds. To stop at a fair point and seek honest mediation guards against winning yet losing.
