Water(坎 ☵) soaking evenly through the Earth(坤 ☷) — a hexagram of drawing near and holding together.
比 is the closeness of standing side by side and helping. As water sinks into the earth and becomes one with it, things draw near and support one another. If the Army(師) was the gathering of force, this is the warmth of kinship.
The Judgment says: upright and steadfast from the first, without fault (原筮元永貞 无咎); the uneasy come, but one who comes late meets ill (後夫凶). Even in togetherness there is a right time, and to be late is to lose one's place.
At the center of this joining stands a single 陽 line, toward which the many gather. Closeness is good — but it lasts only when it stands upon what is upright (貞).
The upper trigram is Water(坎 ☵), the lower Earth(坤 ☷). Its image is water soaking evenly into the earth — things drawing near and becoming one.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Difficulty at the Beginning(屯) · both at once; the second, The Abysmal(坎) · sun through rain; the third, Obstruction(蹇) · with the current; the fourth, Gathering Together(萃) · sun through rain; the fifth, The Receptive(坤) · with the current; the top, Contemplation(觀) · with the current. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the tenth of the fifteen places in the Spring Equinox(春分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around May 15 to 21, in the solar term Start of Summer (立夏) — when summer begins and the new green deepens. The place before it belongs to The Army(師); the place after, to The Taming Power of the Small(小畜). The exact dates shift a little each year; which hexagram governs today can be seen, with your own chart, in the main app. Why the days are divided this way is set out under Jikil in the glossary.
Someone with the grain of this hexagram often stands close among people, together with them. Only — the key is to gather toward an upright center, not just anyone. Do not miss the time to join, and keep closeness from tipping into flattery.
