땅(坤) 아래로 해(離)가 잠긴, 빛이 가려진 괘입니다.
명이(明夷)는 밝음이 상한다는 뜻, 해가 땅속으로 들어간 자리입니다. 밝음을 드러내면 다치는 때라, 괘사는 어려움 속에서 곧음이 이롭다(利艱貞)고 합니다. 안으로 밝되 밖으로는 어리석은 듯 자신을 감추며 마음의 빛을 지키는, 인고의 시기입니다.
상괘는 땅 地(坤·토), 하괘는 불 火(離·화)입니다. 물상으로는 땅 밑으로 해가 잠긴 형상, 밝음이 가려져 어두운 자리에 견주어집니다.
焦氏易林은 괘 하나마다 예순네 편의 시구를 달아 두었습니다. 지화명이가 하루를 맡은 날 daycolor가 오늘의 시구로 건넬 수 있는 것은 그 가운데 여섯 편 — 여섯 효 가운데 하나가 움직여 닿는 여섯 괘의 시구입니다. 맨 아래 효가 움직이면 지산겸(地山謙) · 비 사이로 햇살, 둘째 효면 지천태(地天泰) · 순(順), 셋째 효면 지뢰복(地雷復) · 비 사이로 햇살, 넷째 효면 뇌화풍(雷火豐) · 순(順), 다섯째 효면 수화기제(水火旣濟) · 순(順), 맨 위 효면 산화비(山火賁) · 비 사이로 햇살. 이름 뒤에 붙인 말은 그 시구의 결입니다 — 길흉의 판정이 아니라 그날의 분위기를 읽는 단서이며, 세 가지 말의 뜻은 용어집의 초씨역림 항목에 적어 두었습니다. 어느 효가 움직이는지는 각자의 사주에 그날의 간지를 더한 수가 정합니다.
焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 지화명이는 추분(秋分) 분기의 다섯 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 10월 17일 무렵부터 23일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 한로(寒露) 무렵 — 찬 이슬이 맺히고 가을이 깊어지는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 천뢰무망(天雷无妄), 바로 뒤는 택수곤(澤水困)이 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
밝음이 상하고 가려진 어두운 자리입니다. 명이(明夷)는 해가 땅에 묻힘 — 어진 이가 뜻을 펴지 못하는 때이지요. 이런 때엔 밝음을 안으로 감추고(用晦而明) 바름을 지키며 견딥니다. 드러내기보다 안으로 지키는 것이 관건입니다.

明夷 means the brightness is wounded — the sun gone down into the ground. It is a time when to show one's light is to be hurt, so the Judgment says rightness in hardship is favourable (利艱貞). Bright within yet seeming dull without, hiding oneself and guarding the heart's light — this is a season of endurance.
The upper trigram is Earth(坤 ☷), the lower Fire(離 ☲). The sun sunk beneath the earth — the light veiled and dim.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Modesty(謙) · sun through rain; the second, Peace / Harmony(泰) · with the current; the third, Return(復) · sun through rain; the fourth, Abundance(豐) · with the current; the fifth, After Completion(旣濟) · with the current; the top, Grace / Adornment(賁) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the fifth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around October 17 to 23, in the solar term Cold Dew (寒露) — when cold dew forms and autumn deepens. The place before it belongs to Innocence(无妄); the place after, to Oppression(困). This is a dark place where the light is wounded and veiled. 明夷 is the sun buried in the earth — a time when the worthy cannot unfold their aims. In such a time, hide the brightness within (用晦而明), keep to rightness, and endure. Guarding within rather than showing is the key.
