여섯 자리가 모두 음(陰)으로 채워진, 땅을 닮은 괘입니다.
상괘도 땅(坤), 하괘도 땅(坤)입니다. 순수한 음(純陰)이 위아래로 겹친, 건(乾)의 짝이 되는 괘이지요. 하늘이 앞서 움직이면 땅은 그 뒤를 받아 만물을 싣고 기릅니다. 받아들이고, 품고, 따르는 힘입니다.
괘사는 암말의 곧음(牝馬之貞)을 말합니다. 암말은 힘이 세되 앞서 내닫지 않고 뒤따르는 짐승이지요. 먼저 가려 하면 길을 잃고, 뒤따르면 주인을 얻는다(先迷後得主)고 한 것도 그 때문입니다. 서남에서 벗을 얻고 동북에서 벗을 잃는다는 말처럼, 곤의 자리에선 어울릴 방향을 아는 것이 중요합니다.
건이 시작이라면 곤은 이룸입니다. 넓은 땅이 모든 것을 마다 않고 싣듯, 곤의 힘은 받아들임에 있습니다. 유순함은 약함이 아니라, 큰 것을 담아내는 그릇의 넓이입니다.
상괘와 하괘가 모두 땅 地(坤)이며, 오행으로는 토(土) 기운에 듭니다. 물상으로는 땅, 어머니, 너른 들, 유순함, 무엇이든 받아 담는 그릇에 견주어집니다.

焦氏易林의 육일칠분(六日七分) 배열에서 중지곤은 추분(秋分) 분기의 열두 번째 자리에 놓입니다. 해마다 양력 11월 28일 무렵부터 12월 4일 무렵까지 엿새쯤을 맡으며, 절기로는 소설(小雪) 무렵 — 첫눈이 내리기 시작하는 때입니다. 바로 앞은 택풍대과(澤風大過), 바로 뒤는 화수미제(火水未濟)가 하루를 맡습니다. 정확한 날짜는 그해 절기에 따라 조금씩 달라지며, 오늘 어떤 괘가 하루를 맡는지는 본편에서 사주와 함께 확인할 수 있습니다. 날짜를 이렇게 나누는 까닭은 용어집의 직일 항목에 적어 두었습니다.
중지곤의 결을 지닌 사람은 앞장서기보다 받쳐서 이루는 쪽입니다. 유순함과 포용이 큰 힘이 되지요. 다만 방향은 남을 따르되, 자기 중심까지 내주지는 않는 것 — 담되 휩쓸리지 않는 것이 이 괘의 균형입니다.

Earth(坤 ☷) above, earth(坤 ☷) below. Pure 陰 stands doubled here, the counterpart to Heaven(乾). When heaven moves first, earth receives behind it and carries and nurtures all things. It is the force that accepts, holds, and follows.
The Judgment speaks of the constancy of a mare (牝馬之貞). A mare is strong, yet does not bolt ahead; she follows. Go first and you lose the way; follow and you find your master. As with gaining friends in the southwest and losing them in the northeast, in this place it matters to know which way to keep company.
If Heaven(乾) is the beginning, Earth(坤) is the completion. As the wide earth carries everything without refusal, its power lies in receiving. Gentleness is not weakness but the breadth of a vessel large enough to hold great things.
Both trigrams are Earth(坤 ☷), of the Earth(土) phase. Its images are the earth, the mother, broad fields, yieldingness, and the vessel that receives whatever is placed in it.
The Jiaoshi Yilin sets sixty-four verses under every hexagram. On a day this hexagram keeps, the verse daycolor offers for today can be one of only six — the verses of the six hexagrams reached when a single line moves. If the bottom line moves, it is Return(復) · sun through rain; the second, The Army(師) · sun through rain; the third, Modesty(謙) · with the current; the fourth, Enthusiasm(豫) · sun through rain; the fifth, Holding Together(比) · with the current; the top, Splitting Apart(剝) · sun through rain. The words after each name give the grain of that verse — a cue to its mood, not a verdict of fortune or misfortune; the three are explained under the Jiaoshi Yilin in the glossary. Which line moves is decided by a number drawn from your own saju together with the stems and branches of that day.
In the six-days-seven-fen (六日七分) day-arrangement of the Jiaoshi Yilin, this hexagram holds the twelfth of the fifteen places in the Autumn Equinox(秋分) quarter. In most years that is about six days, from around November 28 to December 4, in the solar term Minor Snow (小雪) — when the first snow begins to fall. The place before it belongs to Preponderance of the Great(大過); the place after, to Before Completion(未濟). Someone with the grain of this hexagram completes and supports more than they lead; yieldingness and inclusion become great strengths. Only — follow others in direction, but do not give away your own center. To hold without being swept away is this hexagram's balance.
